History
By Alyssa Rice, Owner of Nate’s Candy Jar
After my mother passed away in August of 2000, a good friend of mine Nancy Hunt, offered to help us out by inviting by son Nathan to her house to make candy. They made the most delicious caramels I had ever eaten and believe me, I have tried many!
Later, Nathan overheard my husband Tom and I talking about raising money to build a new playground for the local elementary school. He then ran into the kitchen and said, “I have a great idea, let’s make caramels and sell them at Lazy Days,” (Lazy Days is a festival which happens every August in Gosport Indiana, our home town).
I looked at Tom and said, “That’s not a bad idea.” And so, my two sons Nathan and Evan, my husband Tom, and I made caramels to sell at Lazy Days and in the end we made over $3,000!
We called them “Nate’s Caramels,” N.A.T.E. stands for: N: Nathan, A: Alyssa, T: Tom, and E: Evan. “Candy Jar” came from a suggestion from my sister. So, Nate’s Candy Jar was born!
It’s a name that is dear to my heart and to our entire family.
